The partisan breakdowns shown are ones which took effect following the general elections in the specified year.

[1] John Yudichak (District 14) switched parties from Democratic to Independent in November 2019 and began caucusing with the Republican majority (28 R, 21 D, 1 I).
[2] Due to a party switch by Sen. Frank Pecora from Republican to Democrat, the Senate was split; in the case of ties, however, the Lt. Governor casts the deciding vote, and as a Democrat, he gave his party control. After months of turmoil, a special election result was thrown out that had been won by Democrat William G. Stinson, who had succeeded fellow Democrat Francis Lynch. A federal judge awarded the election to Republican Bruce Marks. Additionally, Democrat Eugene Scanlon's death in March 1994 gave Republicans control (26 R, 24 D).
[3] Due to the Democrat Lt. Governor casting the deciding vote, the Democrats took control of the chamber.
[4] A Republican Speaker was elected.
